		<description>
	About
The Canvas is a virtual space where art can be viewed, enjoyed and engaged with. In creating this magazine, we want to illustrate the breadth of art coming out of the University of Reading and its surrounding community, art which will be included in following issues. Everything from visual art to spoken word, poetry, prose, flash fiction, photography, paintings, and performance art is welcome in The Canvas. This format differs from the archived print copies of The University of Reading Creative Arts Anthology which were limited to printable artforms such as written, painted, or photographic works. In our online issues we can showcase diverse artists and artforms, offering a fluid and absorbing experience for our readers.
Visit our Archives tab to read our previous, printed issues.
The Canvas is maintained by a voluntary team of editors and website designers which changes yearly to coincide with new personnel joining and graduating from the university. We gratefully acknowledge support from the Senate Committee for the Arts and the Department of English Literature in the School of Literature and Languages at the University of Reading.

Meet the Editors &#38;amp; Designer

Issue two is full of poetry and art by talented artists and writers from the university and local area. We are beyond excited to be releasing yet another wonderful issue to be enjoyed by Reading’s creative community. We are also very pleased to have some art and writing by alumni.
Issue two has been edited by third-year students, Chloe Baker, Helen Zeineh, and Tiffany Tse. Chloe is studying English Literature and Creative Writing, Helen is studying Creative Writing and Film, and Tiffany is studying English Language and Literature. The website designer for this issue has been Natalia Biegala who studies Typography and Graphic Communication.
The Canvas team would like to thank Peter Robinson for his guidance and support of The Canvas. This project could not have been published without his invaluable effort. Our thanks also to Eric Kindel who supervised and supported the designer as part of the Real Jobs scheme in the Typography &#38;amp; Graphic Communication department. We would also like to thank Rowena Comrie for her permission to use her painting Fastlane as this issue’s cover art. Lastly, we would like to thank and congratulate the wonderful creatives who have sent their art and writing over to us.
As ever, if the work presented here inspires you to submit your own, please send it our way at thecanvas@reading.ac.uk.&#38;nbsp;Find out how to become part of the third issue by heading over to our submit section on the website.
That’s all from us at The Canvas. Enjoy!

Panic
We’ve been here. Already. The storm and the chaos of the passing permanence. The shift and the collapse in the ground beneath our feet. We’ve sat in this room before, and we’ve already seen the imminent collapse and the inevitable reconstruction. Hold on to what has always been the unchanging behind the surface of a continuous change.

You know we’ve been here before. Inability to locate solidity, security, safety in all its solid forms. We’ve been here before where the infinite freedom, the infinite possibilities of life, the boundless confusion trembles your heart with dread of the liberating strangeness of your surroundings.

We’ve been here before where death is nearer than life. Where your beating heart and racing mind metamorphosises into a fatal weapon against your peace, detaching themselves from you, replacing their familiarity with fear and isolation.

Remember that here is where we have already been and forget the illusory importance of safety. Embrace the storm and the lightning and see them as the interchanging parallel to the sun and the summer breeze.

Let us sit on the surface of the turbulent water and do not let yourself drown. The sky and the ground, the mind and the body will come into one and the longed-for silence will replace the commotion.

We’ve been here before and to this place we will return.

A Lover’s Flit

I remember a lamp-lit street. The churned mud. My coated boots. The reflections of my marathon in glazed windows. The chase for your starlight. Past open casket addicts, noseless drunks. Hungry thugs. I remember the stench of booze permeated the air. The trees on the green. Whispering in the dark. Yellow-sheened eyes observing through the leaves. Sirens carried by the wind—a closed casket addict. The local yobs. Huddled around a bandstand yet oblivious to its meaning. A dedication to fallen soldiers. School kids webbed in the wrong crowd. Leering as I run past. The turn to your road. Uniform terrace homes. Nothing special but your door. Freshly painted navy blue. The mosaic glass panes now slightly frosted. Number thirteen encrusted. The green man knocker. The bell rang. My heart-beaten head. Your slow descent of the stairs, rhythmic like the ticking of a clock. A countdown for fate. Your answer.

Biography: I graduated recently from the University of Reading, studying English Literature with Creative Writing. I have now moved on to study for an MA in Creative Writing. I haven’t been writing for too long but like to think I specialise in prose poetry and short stories.

The Colours of Space

I can feel the dirt beneath. The bark covered trees. Their nightmare swirls like a wall of fleshy faces. A saltless sea above me. Thousands of wired beads of fire. I feel alone in their void. No soul left here. The creeping cold sets in. A maelstrom of mist plumets to the ground. The colours of space. Floating like a feather as an age passes through me. Alone in this earthen embrace. A burden on my bones. An un-whispered tale. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. I see that now.

Biography: I graduated recently from the University of Reading, studying English Literature with Creative Writing. I have now moved on to study for an MA in Creative Writing. I haven’t been writing for too long but like to think I specialise in prose poetry and short stories.

Cemetery Junction

The
arch at
the Junction
is the gateway.
A tranquil triangle of
weeping beech and over-
spilling oak, flanked on 3 sides
by ever-extended terraces and new flats
and more new flats and a coaching inn that came
out as a gay bar then an ice-cream parlour and sits empty
(for now). And a pub where you could buy weed but not stay for drinks.
Somehow, this verdant maze escapes busy days of commuters and passers-by.
Me and the wee man (and the odd alcoholic) meander among the Dearly Departed.
Those stones still-standing host 50 shades of green and lean towards committal; their vestigial
lead letters abdicating in droves—unvoicing their losses. The soon-to-be forever-forgotten Rest
in Peace beneath forget-me-nots, nettles and chimney pots.
Sarah Slaughter—Sadly Missed daughter of George and Violet.
Mary Eighteen, fell asleep aged 16. Sun-bleached plastic flowers claim she was once
remembered.
My wee man clambers on crumbling epitaphs and stuffs coloured stones in his pockets hurtles
after magpies.
Sweet Joan, called to her heavenly home. A tender and devoted mother. Ugh.
Florence Fanny Cooper, aged 32. Beloved wife of Oliver. Her stone achingly absent of the
devoted Oliver.
My spinning son leaps across plots and stops only to right a toppled memorial vase. Dearest
Dad. He duly deposits coloured stones from his pockets.
An armless angel prays with another who is smothered in ivy—they transcend scattered cans of
Fanta and San Miguel.
Here, behind Mary Wienholt’s vault is a secret place.
We crunch inside and kneel in the heavy, dappled quiet of a cedar.
A huddle of gravestones stands immemorial, un-eroded and ivy-free.
They declare Never Forgotten and Peace Perfect Peace.
Interstices of light and shadow create flowers forever.
He fumbles in his pockets but we are not alone.
A shush of light follows a muntjac deer; she stops in her tracks—silhouetted and steaming.
His mouth is a breathless O.
Wide eyes meet wild eyes.
For one long second, they are fast.
For one long perfect second they are everything that is breathing and beating and being before
she skitters off.
Inside a busy traffic junction lies a battered two-hundred-year-old cemetery full of forgotten souls,
broken angels and faded plastic flowers.
Underneath a cedar tree is a neat pile of coloured stones.
A celebration.

Biography: Charlotte has loved reading poetry for many years and has dabbled but has only been writing in earnest since joining an online poetry writing group during lockdown. This poem was featured on Radio Berkshire She has lived in Reading since 1995 when she came to research (temporarily) at the University of Reading.

Context: This poem was in response to a writing group prompt about Pastoral poetry and the old cemetery at Cemetery Junction in Reading was a natural subject. Charlotte and her son spent a lot of time wandering round the old cemetery when they lived nearby. The events described in this poem are true-ish.
