There are many qualities which are important in a nurse. Medical know-how and experience, it goes without saying, Sister, but the ability to adapt and a sureness of character trumps that –
to think fast, move fast. Grab the grenade and volley it without a second thought.
To be resourceful, find what is needed to stem the flow, Sister. Rely upon your instincts;
they will not let you down.
Take nonsense from no one, Sister. Even your superiors. Do not allow for favourites.
You will be charmed by many, I have no doubt, but you are the nurse, they, the patient. Many will come and go one way or another. It does no good to form an attachment.
Do not leave steel washbowls on the ward, Sister. Soldiers will seek out their distorted reflection. Razor blades must all be accounted for.
Certain things experience can teach that’s not in the modern books: sometimes the best thing for a messy wound is to allow the black flies to settle. Apply a dressing and wait, Sister. The resulting maggots thrive on what is already dead and clear the way for healing.
Your gas mask always first, Sister.
Keep something strong in a hip flask.
Lipstick, Sister. You will need regular reminders that you are still a woman.
