Sirocco

gusts
palm fronds
(fingers through hair)
hovers gulls
at cliff edge,
spirals them,
lashes bougainvillea,
jasmine, japonica,
strips petals,
dapples awnings,
piles and waves
sand across the beach,
presses sparrows to perch,

drives sea horses
to course into shore,

hits salt onto rocks,
downs the kites,
slams doors into frames,
windows near to shatter,
shutters to bang
against their iron hooks,
tangles flags,
leaves flower-heads
on café tables
(torn and rusted
hibiscus gifts)
quivers lampstandards
anoints swimming pools
with shredded leaves,
swishes fern bushes,
drops the green fruits
from orange trees,

then drags on out
to daub cloud
on the burdened orb
the sun in the bay
