winter trees, the sidewalk’s damp
overnight, gone crystalline, wind,
faces wrapped tight and turned

downward; the day scuffs along;
Chicago, its weights counted out
in negative numbers, minus,

below, the less than nothing,
you press yourself against, still
the blue sky, steam-flaked, shines


Biography: Michael is an American poet, novelist, essayist. He taught creative writing at many American universities and has received a multitude of awards for his work.
