The Invitation
The invitation never came
to the house on Henley Lane
I bit my lip, sucked in the shame
Of a friendship so one sided
A kindred spirit when we met
In retrospect, that’s how it felt
Along the road, I questioned if
I was just the entertainment
The world shut down, we caught up
Disappointing for you but
You gathered that we didn’t have much
Let me ease your boredom
We chatted about the bygone days
swapped photographs, my oldest friend
Our parents died no surprise
the invitation never came.
